America needs more High Tech Engineers to boost production and lower unemployment Paul Owen, discusses America’s forgotten immigration problem: our need for high tech engineers. According to Owen, so much focus has been put the visible waves of immigrant and cheap factory laborers that we’ve forgotten about the invisible undertow in the form of a ‘brain drain’ that continues to erode America’s leading edge in technology. Paul Owen asks, “30 million illegal unskilled immigrants or 300,000 high tech scientists and engineers: Why is it so difficult to decide? We have two immigration problems. Jobless Claims 8/26

So says the DOL: In the week ending Aug. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 473,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 504,000. The 4-week moving average was 486,750, an increase of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 483,500. Notice the revision - revised up 4,000. So yeah, it was down, but not as much. But again, I'm interested in everyone on these programs, and here the trend is decidedly the wrong way:

Obama jobs death toll watch: More health care layoffs

I said yesterday in my Beltway Chainsaw Massacre column that the GOP needs to track the Obama jobs death toll and tell the victims’ stories far and wide. But there’s no need to wait for the GOP. I’ll keep doing it right here. The first story of the day comes from the Fort Worth Star Telegram in Texas, where a health insurer called Health Markets has laid off 70 workers and expects up to 180 more as it braces for the costs of Obamacare and other government mandates:

The fishermen’s flotilla: Showdown at Martha’s Vineyard

Continuing my coverage of the revolt against the White House ocean grab, here’s the latest on today’s fishermen’s protest flotilla gathering at Martha’s Vineyard while President Obama plays Scrabble and golf with his Chicago cronies. Takeaway quote from this local news report from one of the fishermen outraged at the administration’s junk science-based catch limits: “All these politicians scream about is jobs, jobs, jobs. Why are they putting out of business?” Related: Corruption, waste, and anti-fishing vendettas at NOAA have been rampant. Background from Richard Gaines of the Gloucester Daily Times here and here. More from Andrew Malcolm at Top...

Hospital to cut about 50 jobs Cutbacks blamed on reforms

LEOMINSTER — About 50 full-time jobs will be eliminated at the HealthAlliance Hospital — Leominster Campus, and one of two planned expansion projects may be cut back. Mary Lourdes Burke, chief communications officer for the hospital, said yesterday the job cuts do not mean 50 layoffs, because some were vacant positions that will not be filled, and some were positions that had hours reduced. Also, she said, some union contracts required moving employees into other posts. The cuts were made from the main Leominster Campus, the Burbank Campus in Fitchburg, and the HealthAlliance Homehealth & Hospice on Tucker Drive in...

Lack of skilled workers threatens recovery: Manpower

Workers with specialized skills like electricians, carpenters and welders are in critically short supply in many large economies, a shortfall that marks another obstacle to the global economic recovery, a research paper by Manpower Inc concludes. "It becomes a real choke-point in future economic growth," Manpower Chief Executive Jeff Joerres said. "We believe strongly this is really an issue in the labor market." The global staffing and employment services company says employers, governments and trade groups need to collaborate on strategic migration policies that can alleviate such worker shortages. Skilled work is usually specific to a given location: the work...

Election Day Shocker: 10 Percent Unemployment

Here comes 10 percent unemployment, according to chief Moody's economist Mark Zandi. The analyst the White House likes to quote told a group of reporters today that the economy is recovering very slowly and that jobs will continue to be lost for months, leading to an unemployment rate of 10 percent as early as Election Day and no later than the end of the year. In a wide-ranging discussion of the economy with reporters, Zandi focused on the recovery and jobs outlook. In the short term, he said, job losses will continue at about 50,000 a month, leading to a...
